Not every great film gets the fame it deserves. Some films slip through the cracks – overlooked by audiences, underrated by critics, or lost in the hype of bigger releases. So we’ll be looking at movies that don’t always get the credit they deserve (Top 10 Most Underrated Movies of All Time). These films may or may not have been acclaimed in their day but definitely need another renaissance. If we forget one of your favourite films? Let us know in the comments below.

NumNumber 10: In the Mood for Love (2000)

Directed by: Wong Kar-wai
Genre: Romance, Drama

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou takes on the works of Jacques Cousteau by way of offbeat comedy. Bringing his dry humour to the mix, Bill Murray stars as the titular oceanographer in search of an elusive jaguar shark.
Filmmaker Wes Anderson crafts a highly stylised adventure full of memorable characters played by a cast of all-star actors. Murray and the gang all make this story worthwhile with a mix of light entertainment and emotional depth. There’s also a wild shootout set to a song by The Stooges for good measure. Some feel this is a lesser entry in the director’s filmography, but there’s enough whimsical fun here to entice any fan.

Number 9: Dredd (2012)

Directed by: Pete Travis
Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

This adaptation of the comic series dropped Sylvester Stallone for a much more brutal and gritty look into the character. Karl Urban leaves the helmet on for this version, which focuses the film instead on worldbuilding and fun sequences.
Dredd features a number of chases and shootouts to rival any sci-fi story of its kind. Urban’s subtle acting is a lean interpretation of the title role without slipping into broader territory like his predecessor. The movie also works as a straight-up action flick for those looking for pure entertainment. As long as you’re comfortable with lots of blood and violence, Dredd will more than satisfy your craving.

Number 8: Dan in Real Life (2007)

Directed by: Peter Hedges
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance

Steve Carell has proven himself to be much more than Michael from The Office. One of his early starring roles is a great example, blending drama and comedy into a story of a complicated father.
His character struggles to accept that his daughter is changing her life while also contemplating a relationship with his brother’s partner. Carell bridges the gap between humour and genuine sensitivity in a realistic portrayal of fatherhood. In the part of Dan, he proves that he has a dramatic presence that never feels forced. Cast members like Juliette Binoche and even Dane Cook bring underrated work to this worthwhile dramedy.

Number 7: Thief (1981)

Directed by: Michael Mann
Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller

Michael Mann’s debut feature is among the coolest films of the 80s. Taking the best elements from crime cinema, the director delivers a stylish movie full of rain-drenched streets and shifty characters.
James Caan plays Frank, a skilled robber, in what many consider his greatest performance. Caan pushes beyond typical genre clichés and finds the heart of a troubled man. Alongside fantastic acting and direction, Tangerine Dream’s synth-heavy soundtrack gives this film another memorable element.

Number 6: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

Directed by: Shane Black
Genre: Action, Comedy, Crime

Shane Black was already a hotshot screenwriter before making this directorial debut. The Lethal Weapon scribe brings witty dialogue and a buddy film dynamic to new heights.
Robert Downey Jr plays a petty thief who accidentally lands an acting role, studying with Val Kilmer’s private eye. Their dynamic brings Black’s sharp dialogue to life, making the movie feel improvised and lively. The entire production works as both an intriguing noir and a whip-smart comedy.

Number 5: Gattaca (1997)

Directed by: Andrew Niccol
Genre: Sci-Fi, Drama, Thriller

Andrew Niccol’s sci-fi tale carries deep philosophical ideas. Ethan Hawke stars as Vincent, who strives for greatness in a world that discriminates based on genetics.
Assuming another man’s identity at an aerospace corporation, Vincent faces dramatic pitfalls and rich metaphors around eugenics. Gattaca blends romance and mystery into a tightly wound narrative with bold statements about humanity and technology. (Top 10 Most Underrated Movies of All Time)

Number 4: Matchstick Men (2003)

Directed by: Ridley Scott
Genre: Comedy, Crime, Drama

Nicolas Cage plays a con man with OCD in this Ridley Scott film. Following a panic attack, his partner gets him psychiatric help.
This sets off a plot that reunites him with his supposed daughter and questions his lifestyle. Cage and Sam Rockwell give electric performances in this clever comedy. It’s filled with twists and unpredictable moments, showing that Scott can handle dark humour just as well as sci-fi. (Top 10 Most Underrated Movies of All Time)

Number 3: 50/50 (2011)

Directed by: Jonathan Levine
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance

This dramedy finds humour in the seriousness of cancer. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Adam, who receives a life-changing diagnosis and turns to his friend, played by Seth Rogen, for support.
The story covers his ups and downs, family reactions, and even dating life. Both actors have a natural chemistry, and the film walks the fine line between laughter and tears. (Top 10 Most Underrated Movies of All Time)

Number 2: Detroit (2017)

Directed by: Kathryn Bigelow
Genre: Crime, Drama, History

Catherine Bigelow’s historical drama depicts the 1967 Detroit riot, focusing on events at the Algiers Motel.
Corrupt police respond to a gunshot, unaware it’s from a starter pistol, leading to a tragic confrontation. With a powerful ensemble cast, the film highlights racial injustice and systemic abuse. It may not have received the acclaim of Bigelow’s other films, but it’s a vital and harrowing watch. (Top 10 Most Underrated Movies of All Time)

Number 1: Everybody Wants Some (2016)

Directed by: Richard Linklater
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Sport

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be an athlete in college, this film attempts to scratch the surface. During the last few days before school starts, A freshman baseball player joins his housemates for a chaotic marathon of parties and practices. Director Richard Linklater returns to haunt us in a spiritual sequel reminiscent of his classic Dazed and Confused, and it’s all for the better. A cast of lesser-known actors assemble for some hilarious banter and plenty of antics, Zoe Deutsch joins in the fun with a welcome role as the main character’s girlfriend. Not only does Linklater deliver an enjoyable salute to the ’80s, but he also introduces the world to a number of talented cast members in the process. (Top 10 Most Underrated Movies of All Time)
